Earrings Workshop and Public Lecture in Tucson

Next weekend I am teaching a workshop on Earrings down in Tucson.  We will spend two full days exploring the ins and outs of all different types of earring findings from traditional fishhooks to hinged loops. Styles of earwires covered include several variations of traditional fishhooks, kidney wires, posts, hinged hoops, forged hoops, swing hoops, extended earwires, and more.  I am really excited about this workshop because there really is SO MUCH you can do just with simple earrings!!  And its in my hometown, which is great.  I love having excuses to go home (and Eegees!!) :)

Unfortunately, the workshop sold out pretty quickly so there are no open spots left, but...

I will also be presenting a "FREE and Open to the Public" lecture entitled "Invented Heirlooms".   The lecture will be held on Friday, October 12th from 7:00-8:30pm at the Randolph Center Photo Lecture Room, Bldg #2, 200 S Alvernon Way, Tucson, AZ 85711.  

If you are in Tucson, I would love to see you there.  Talking in front of a crowd is scary but its less scary with friendly faces in the audience!!

 

I have a big show opening next week!  The show is titled eleMEnTAL and features the work of Tedd McDonah, Becky McDonah, and myself.

This exhibition brings together three Arizona metalsmiths, whose aesthetics complement each other but retain their individual forms of expression. With precious and semiprecious metals and stones, these artists create reliquaries and containers, fishing lures, jewelry and other intimate art objects that beacon closer examination. Beyond the elegant surfaces, the work provides a deeper conversation on relationships, attraction, heritage, status and other implications of society.

ASU Metals Alumni Exhibition

Tonight is the opening reception for the ASU Metals Alumni Exhibition.  I have a piece in the show as do many of my friends.  Please make sure to attend the show to see some great metalwork out of the program at ASU!  Also, this show is part of a number of metals exhibitions being held in conjunction with the SNAG conference later this month (you know, that one I've been helping plan for over 2 years now:)  Lets just say I'm excited about everything happening in May but I can't wait for June!!!  See details about the show below!

ASU Alumni artists include recent and not-so recent graduate students and undergraduates in a program that has produced talented, award winning metalsmiths and jewelers.  From one of the best Metals programs in the country, this exhibit showcases the many talents and detailed workmanship of a variety of artists with diverse approaches to working with metal.

Along with the traditional materials and techniques such as blacksmithing, forging and forming, these artists include contemporary practices in enamel, found objects and mixed media.

Some of the artists included in this exhibit are Becky & Tedd McDonah, Deb Lozier, Jessica Calderwood, Lauren McAdams Selden, Eric Burris, Nissa Kubly, Lynette Andreasen, Jill Baker-Gower, Victoria Altepeter, Polly Smith and Dale Wedig.

The Night Gallery at the Tempe Marketplace is an exhibition space for ASU School of Art faculty, graduate students and alumni in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. The gallery is a result of a partnership between the Herberger Institute and Vestar Development Company.

The Night Gallery is located at Tempe Marketplace (intersection of McClintock Rd. and the 202 at 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway) in the District (west end, south side) between Barnes & Noble bookstore and Aeropostale.

The gallery is closed on Monday.

Hiding Places: Memory in the Arts

My Thesis Exhibition: Invented Heirlooms Part 2

Yesterday I posted images of the wall pieces in my thesis show. This post includes images of all the pedestal pieces that were in the exhibition. A lot of the work you have probably already seen, but there were a few new things in the show that maybe you haven't seen yet. Again, all the pictures were taken by my wonderful friend and amazing photographer, Josh White.

These next pieces were actually hung on pylons in the gallery, not pedestals, but they fit more into this post than the last one. They are very (4) large scale steel and sterling silver necklaces, with found antique chandelier crystals. They took a really long time to make and killed my hands, but I found out that I really love blacksmithing!

My Thesis Exhibition: Invented Heirlooms Part 1

My MFA Thesis Exhibition was March 8th-19th. I began installing the show on Friday the 5th at about 5pm. I have amazing friends that came out to help me with the install and thanks to them, the show was completely hung by about 11pm. Then I had the rest of the weekend to prepare (okay, freak out) about my oral defense on Monday morning. The oral defense was Monday morning at 9am. At the defense was my thesis committee, Becky McDonah, Tedd McDonah, and Nancy Serwint (filling in for Clare Verstegen who is on sabbatical). My out of area committee member was Sam Chung. In addition to the committee there were about ten graduate students in the audience. The defense lasted about an hour, after which the committee sent me out to deliberate. They talked amongst themselves for about 20 minutes before calling me back in to let me know that I had passed, and to discuss more about the work and exhibition with me. We talked for about another half an hour and then it was all over.
Basically what we talked about was the general theme of the work, how the different pieces worked together as a group, and what I planned on doing next. We talked about display, materials, and my motivation behind the work. There were no questions that were unexpected or that threw me off guard, which made me very happy. In the next post or so I will include a more lengthy description of the ideas behind the work in my show.
