ASU Metals Alumni Exhibition

Tonight is the opening reception for the ASU Metals Alumni Exhibition.  I have a piece in the show as do many of my friends.  Please make sure to attend the show to see some great metalwork out of the program at ASU!  Also, this show is part of a number of metals exhibitions being held in conjunction with the SNAG conference later this month (you know, that one I've been helping plan for over 2 years now:)  Lets just say I'm excited about everything happening in May but I can't wait for June!!!  See details about the show below!

ASU Alumni artists include recent and not-so recent graduate students and undergraduates in a program that has produced talented, award winning metalsmiths and jewelers.  From one of the best Metals programs in the country, this exhibit showcases the many talents and detailed workmanship of a variety of artists with diverse approaches to working with metal.

Along with the traditional materials and techniques such as blacksmithing, forging and forming, these artists include contemporary practices in enamel, found objects and mixed media.

Some of the artists included in this exhibit are Becky & Tedd McDonah, Deb Lozier, Jessica Calderwood, Lauren McAdams Selden, Eric Burris, Nissa Kubly, Lynette Andreasen, Jill Baker-Gower, Victoria Altepeter, Polly Smith and Dale Wedig.

The Night Gallery at the Tempe Marketplace is an exhibition space for ASU School of Art faculty, graduate students and alumni in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. The gallery is a result of a partnership between the Herberger Institute and Vestar Development Company.

The Night Gallery is located at Tempe Marketplace (intersection of McClintock Rd. and the 202 at 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway) in the District (west end, south side) between Barnes & Noble bookstore and Aeropostale.

The gallery is closed on Monday.

I will miss this place. A lot.

Well, its official. I am done at ASU. I turned all my keys in yesterday. I spent the last 7 years working in this studio. I will miss every single crowded dirty dusty nook and cranny. I will miss always having people around when I am working.I will miss bumping my hips into anvils and always having mystery bruises because we have so much packed into such a tight space:)

I will miss teaching.
I'll miss the Yuma trophies that ASU Metals has won over the years.

I will miss Dave's presence in the studio.

I will miss the tools!
I will miss Sir Sucksalot (our beadblaster).
I will miss the stakes (not that I did a huge amount of forming or raising).
I will miss the big annealing torches.

And I hate to admit it because it drove me crazy most of the time, but I will miss the belt sander!
I'll miss the casting room, even though I almost never used it.
I will definitely miss the draw bench and the stomp shear.
I will miss the enameling/acid etching room a ton!
I will miss my flawless big huge anvil.

And all the pretty hammers.

I will miss the history embedded in that studio. Like this little piece of wood on the underside of my bench that was marked with the initials of grads who were there before me (Becky Chader McDonah, Lauren McAdams, and Eric Burris)

And maybe more than anything I will miss my professor Tedd leaving me notes directly on my bench with a sharpie (instead of just leaving a note on a piece of paper!!!)

Oh man am I going to miss that place.

4th Annual Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition

Its that time again! We here at ASU Metals are getting ready to host our 4th Annual Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition.

I am really excited about the show...there is a TON of really awesome work in it this year! Hopefully I will have the catalog finished sometime this week and it will be available for purchase soon! That way you all can enjoy the show even if you can't come see it!

Oh, and I got to design the postcard for this one too. I LOVE all the color in the images this year! Its going to be a great show!

Megan's Visit

Megan Auman came as a Visiting Artist to ASU a couple weeks ago. We had a great time and I learned SO MUCH! She did a professional development workshop with us and presented topics including: her journey from one of a kind to microproduction, goal setting, branding, creating a packet, marketing and promotion, web tools, pricing, selling, wholesale vs retail, shows, protecting your work, etc. It was so informative! She gave us a ton of resources and lots of advice that I am sure I will be using for years to come.

Hopefully she had fun while she was here too...we did take a little time to play on the lazer engraver and burn some pattern onto a couple of her cozy cuffs. She also brought me my very own cozy/cuff which I LOVE!

I got these fun little pins, and this ring below from my professor, Becky McDonah. Its an Olive you ring...get it? I LOVE (Olive) you!! SO awesome.This ring was made by my professor Tedd McDonah. Visiting Artist: Megan Auman

Ever since I applied to grad school at Towson University and had a chance to speak with Megan Auman, I thought it would be really cool to have the chance to learn from her. This year at ASU, I decided to try and bring her in as a visiting artist and as luck would have it the stars alligned and she is able to come! I'm really excited about this event and the opportunity to learn from her! Megan will be doing a sort of professional development workshop with the students here and we are super excited about what she will be sharing with us. I am sure I will have an update for you after the event!

Dynamical Balance: MFA Thesis Exhibition by Victoria Altepeter

My very good friend, Victoria Altepeter,will be opening her thesis show on Monday.

The show will run from March 23 - March 27.
The Opening Reception is Monday, March 23 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. In the Harry Wood Art Gallery in The Katherine K Herberger School of Art, Art Building.

Third Annual Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition Catalog is FINALLY here!

Something I have been working on for a few months now is the Third Annual Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition Catalog. We wanted to publish a full color catalog to go with the exhibition we hosted at asu in October. Well it took me FOREVER, but it is finally here! Every piece in the show is included in this full color catalog. This book is a great way to see what other students and faculty are producing at institutions around the country. It was a lot of work, but it looks great and will be something I reference long into the future.

This book is a complete full color catalog of the Third Annual Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition hosted by Arizona State University in 2008.

The ASU Metalworking Department was proud to host the 3rd Annual Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition, held October 6th-16th, 2008. The Exhibition consisted of eight universities from across the nation, incorporating work from undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members from the participating departments. Each institution was responsible for jurying the work to represent their program. The exhibition was a great opportunity to educate, inspire and develop public and academic awareness in the field of metalworking as well as encourage interaction among metalworking departments on a national scale. It showcased a wonderfully diverse cross-section of what is happening in metals studios across the country.
