A visit to my old stomping grounds.

This weekend I went down to tucson for the Pima County Fair. When I was growing up I was in 4-H club (I showed pigs and sheep) and spent a week at the fair every year. I love county fairs...the terrible food, the amazing people watching, the rides, attractions, the livestock shows, every little bit of it!

I got deep fried oreos...they were amazing...and probably took ten years off my life!I spent most of the weekend in the barn watching the livestock auctions. My parents still go and buy animals every year.I also went to the freak show...it was weird. It had a two nosed cow, a siamese turtle, a six legged cow, a two headed pig and lots of other crazy weird stuff.
Gotta love the Footsie Wootsie!
The heart of America right here, meat, meat, and more meat.

And, I got to go to a Jake Owen concert! I'm a country girl at heart so I loved it.

It was a really great weekend!

Big Announcement!!

As many of you know, I am finishing up my MFA this semester and am graduating in May. Many of you have been asking me the big question, "What's next?" Well, if you know me well you know that I always like to have a lot on my plate, so that is no easy question to answer, but I can answer at least part of it right now (and I'll post the rest soon!)

One of my big goals for a looooong time has been to get a production line of jewelry together. I want to make a cohesive line of functional jewelry pieces that I can market to galleries and boutiques. Well, I am so happy to say that I am finally doing it!

I have a new line of jewelry in progress and will be launching the full product line this summer. More info to follow as the time gets closer but for now, here are some teaser shots of the new jewels! I hope you love them as much as I do!

Hardware Experiment #1

sterling silver, fine silver, found antique hardware
pique on found object and hand fabricated sterling silver chainsee hardware in its original state below

Recent Acquisition

Sometimes I get a little carried away on ebay. Sometimes its totally worth it though! Check out this lot of antique Victorian hardware I just scored. I'm almost finished making a necklace out of one of the wooden handles, pics coming soon! I did some silver pique inlay in the wood and made a chain...its really simple but it was fun to do. I love taking old things with such a sense of history and making them into wearable little treasures.

Pinatas

This semester I am teaching three dimensional design at ASU. We did a really fun project at the beginning of the semester that I'm excited about and want to share! There was a call for entries for a Mutant Pinata Show at Braggs Pie Factory in Phoenix. I had my students make pinatas and submit them to the exhibition. I think most of them had fun and some of them turned out great. Here are just a couple:
(If you want to go see these for yourself, there are some really really great ones, you still have a chance this friday (tomorrow night) for third fridays!)

Spoon Handle Earring Group

I don't think I've posted an image of the whole group of these on here yet. These earrings are all made from antique baby spoon handles. The spoon bowls were made into the necklace at the bottom of this post. I have one pair of handles left...I think I am going to make a mold so I can cast more of these. I really like the earrings but know I will probably never find a set of baby spoons again, much less a set of 12, so if I make a mold I can make more of the earrings. I may use these to apply to the Earrings show at Heidi Lowe Gallery...not sure yet.

Damascus Brooch

This is the only piece of jewelry I made with the damascus steel I made last semester. Its a simple little brooch that I completed a couple of weeks before my thesis show. I like the pattern and the combination of the steel with the pearls. The steel was so not fun to cut. I ended up hacking it out with the band saw and grinding it to shape...my jewelers saw just couldn't get through it. Not sure I'll be making anything else with the damascus anytime soon, but you never know.
