Etching Class

This summer I will be teaching a 5 week etching class at Phoenix Center for the Arts.
Description: Etching is the technique of using acids to create imagery on a metal surface. An acid resistant ground is applied to the metal after which in can be removed to certain portions of the metal underneath. Various uses of ground application to achieve different results will be covered, including traditional asphaltum, nail polish, Sharpie marker, paint pen, and PNP paper for photo and design transfer. Open to all levels.

I wish I could take your class. I've really been wanting to try some etching, but am too nervous to do it at home.

its not that bad! Although I wouldnt etch silver at home! Nitric acid gives me nightmares:) The copper stuff isnt bad though! You can even get it at Radio Shack. Its called PC etchant but really its just ferric chloride. You can etch and neutralize everything with baking soda when you are done. No biggie!

I remember etching on glass in gifted class . Is it a similar method?

kinda...etching on glass is with a pretty non agressive paste...etching on metal is submerging it in scary acids. But you use a resist in the same way and it has similar effects!
