What is Art?

An answerless question, I think.
Apparently a diamond covered skull by British artist Damien Hirst sold on Thursday for 100 million dollars , setting a record price for work sold by a living artist. Now my question is, what do you think of this? I'm not going to say what I think (for once) I'd like to hear what you have to say...speak liberally.
(These photos were taken from yahoo).
I just have to say, is he trying to make art, or get into the Guiness Book of World Records??

Ok I'm a little anxious about giving my opinion on art to an artist but I'm going to go ahead and be honest. I saw this on the news the other day. My thought is, "if i had enought diamonds and human skull, I'm pretty sure I could come up with something like this." So is it worth a 100 million bucks because its covered with diamonds or because its unigue or because he's the artist? There are a lot of things I don't understand about art but this one baffles me. So the jist is, no I don't consider this art. Hopefully I haven't offended anyone with my non-creative, non-artist opinion.

PS. Oh the things I could do with $100 million!!! Like feed the masses for instance!

Lynette, Sorry it took me so long to respond to what I wanted,I want the double looped earrings(I think someone else purchased them in the past).....and that diamond head skull is a pretty interesting piece of art. I guess it provokes comments and thought if anything.

I wonder how much he paid the jeweler that actually set the stones.

My thought is It's because he did it first, therefore it's "Original".

Hi Lynette, just discovered your blog so have been enjoying reading up on your earlier posts. My teacher Anna had a discussion on this piece by Damien Hirst on her blog also which might interest you. http://davernator.blogspot.com/2007/07/diamonds-art-and-immortality.html.

I think that he is more interested in getting his name in the paper than getting into the book of world records! Thanks for your comment, nice to meet you.
